Gangotri Dham is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site located in the beautiful state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the majestic Himalayas at an altitude of around 3,100 meters. It is one of the four holy shrines of the Char Dham Yatra and is considered the origin of the holy River Ganga, which is known here as the Bhagirathi River. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance to bring Goddess Ganga down to earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, was built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks, dense forests, and the flowing river, Gangotri offers a peaceful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere. The actual source of the Ganga lies at Gaumukh Glacier, about 19 km from the temple, which is also a popular trekking destination. The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Diwali due to heavy snowfall, making it a seasonal yet deeply revered destination for devotees and travelers alike.
